On acidic and poor soils, the plant grows thanks to mycorrhizal symbiotic relationship with fungi. When grown on soils rich in nitrogen and calcium, this plant become atrophied. Because of demanding to light lingonberry grows on clearings and in forest clearings. Can be found in dry, especially pine forests. It grows on poor, sandy, acidic soils, on the moors and bogs. The fruits are shiny rounded multi-seed berries, red when ripened, mealy, sour and bitter. There are ten stamens in flower with anthers terminated with two tubular outgrowths. Corolla is divided (not more than to mid-height) in pointed tips that bend out. Lightly scented overhanging campanulate compound corolla with 5 petals is pink or white colored. Membranous calyx of 5 compound sepals creates triangular ciliate calix tips. Regular bisexual flowers with short stems form short terminal drooping racemes. The obverse side is glossy and dark green, the underside is lighter, brown spotted. Alternate leaves are thick, leathery, evergreen and shortly petiolate.
